AWS spending cap: Partial
Does AWS have a hard spending cap?
Partial Per the docs as of Oct 14, 2026: AWS Budgets alert you and can run budget actions (apply IAM/SCP deny policies, target EC2/RDS instances). There is no single account-wide dollar kill switch in the fetched docs. New accounts can choose a Free plan.
How do I turn on a spending limit in AWS?
- Create a cost budget in AWS Budgets with actual and forecasted alerts.
- Set up the IAM role that lets AWS Budgets run actions.
- Configure a budget action (e.g. apply a custom Deny IAM policy or SCP, or stop specific EC2/RDS instances), automatic or after manual approval.
- If you are new, consider the Free plan instead of the Paid plan at signup.
What happens when the AWS limit is hit?
Alerts: nothing stops. Budget actions: only what the action does (e.g. block provisioning new resources, act on targeted instances). Already-running services you did not target keep billing.
Gotchas
- Budget actions do not stop all services; you must design them.
- From the management account you can't target EC2/RDS instances in another account.
- Free plan accounts have limits on which services they can use; upgrading to Paid is a console action.
