Firebase spending cap: Partial
Does Firebase have a hard spending cap?
Partial Per the docs as of Oct 14, 2026: Since Sept 2026 Firebase has spend cap budgets (Preview) that pause selected services. The docs explicitly say they are not “hard caps”.
How do I turn on a spending limit in Firebase?
- Make sure the project is on the Blaze plan.
- In the Firebase console open the Accounts & budgets section.
- Create a spend cap budget for an eligible service: Firebase AI Logic, Firebase App Hosting, Cloud Functions for Firebase, or Firebase Extensions.
- Set the amount slightly below your true limit (the docs recommend this).
What happens when the Firebase limit is hit?
At 100% of the service budget, Cloud Billing pauses new usage of that service for the rest of the month, unless you explicitly lift the cap. It resets at the start of next month.
Gotchas
- Docs: “Spend caps are not ‘hard caps’” — enforcement can be delayed by several minutes and overages during the delay are billed.
- Only the four listed services are eligible; any other service in the project is not on that list.
- Alerts-only budgets (created automatically on Blaze upgrade) do NOT pause anything.
- Feature is in Preview: no SLA, may change.
- Google Cloud recommends adding API key restrictions to limit the impact of a compromised key (see API key best practices).
