Google Cloud (general) spending cap: Partial

Last verified: against official docs (links below).

Does Google Cloud (general) have a hard spending cap?

Partial Per the docs as of Oct 14, 2026: Standard Cloud Billing budgets only alert. A true stop requires a DIY automation that disables billing on the project, which Google warns can irreversibly delete resources.

How do I turn on a spending limit in Google Cloud (general)?

  1. Create a budget in Cloud Billing (alerts only by default).
  2. For a hard stop, follow Google's “Disable billing usage with notifications” tutorial: budget → Pub/Sub notification → function that disables billing on the project.
  3. Test it on a non-production project first.

Console labels change; if a step doesn't match, follow the official doc.

What happens when the Google Cloud (general) limit is hit?

Budgets alone: nothing stops. With the disable-billing automation: all Google Cloud services in the project are terminated, including Free Tier services.
